who
are we?
Regroupement de Protection des Lacs de la Petite Nation Petite-Nation (RPLPN), or La Petit-Nation Lakes Protection Group.
We are a group of 10 lake protection associations, located in La Petite-Nation.
We are united and in solidarity with the same cause: to prevent the extraordinary environment of biodiversity that we occupy from being transformed into a mining region.
We are behind a strong mobilization represented by all 25 municipalities of the MRC Papineau and multiple organizations. This coalition demonstrates that there is no social acceptability for mining development in our region.
Our website will clarify some of the issues surrounding mining in our regions.
our
story
Water quality has always been the main priority of lake protection associations.
In 2019, we saw the emergence of a major threat: the development of open-pit graphite mines, with very permissive government rules that promote the exploitation of this ore. It was at this time that the Regroupement de Protection des Lacs de la Petite Nation Petite-Nation (RPLPN), was created.
The La Loutre mining project, led by Lomiko Metals Inc., represents a major challenge for our communities who want to protect their territory against the harmful effects of mining.
are we doing
We are working to mobilize the entire population of the Outaouais and challenge the current government rules concerning territories incompatible with mining activity (TIAM). This excessively permissive regulation authorizes mining companies to develop the Grenville graphite geological zone that runs throughout our territory.
We strongly oppose the La Loutre open-pit mining project led by Lomiko Metals Inc. This mine would have a devastating effect on the environment, biodiversity and the social cohesion of our communities.
our motivations, our challenges?
Our primary motivation is first and foremost the protection of our natural and human environments.
Our region, so close to major centers, has been spared industrial development; it has thus been able to preserve an exceptional biodiversity and quality of life. Over the years, the members of the associations have contributed a great deal to this preservation of the natural environment. However, faced with the imminent arrival of open pit mines, the alert level had to be raised. The situation is all the more worrying because the Government of Quebec is adopting the behavior of a “ promoter ” in this file. Not only must we resist mining projects, but we must also call on the Government of Quebec, which, unfortunately through its rules (TIAM), promotes and supports mining development in our region.
Hence the need for a very strong mobilization. The citizen message must be heard and received by the government, but also by those who promote these projects that are so harmful to our environment.
