GRAPHITE
IN QUEBEC

An open door to the devastation of our natural environments

The number of mining claims has exploded in recent years. Mining exploration doubled between 2015 and 2020, and the largest graphite mine in the West will be located in Quebec. In 2015, there were 672 active mining claims, and in 2020, this number increased to 1408. Among these, there are 81 claims that are in the Outaouais region. Saint-Michel-des-Saints, in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, is where the largest graphite mine in the West will be located. Nouveau Monde Graphite is a new company that obtained its operating permit in February 2021 to mine in the municipality of Saint-Michel-des-Saints. It plans to produce 100,000 tons of graphite per year, with a concentration level of 4.23% in the bedrock. Faced with this threatening surge in graphite mining in the Outaouais region, we foresee irreparable damage to our environment. Transforming our biodiversity into a mining area is not safeguarding the environment. Our region is incompatible with mining activity. The government must hear the message, listen to its population and adopt measures that protect natural environments and the communities that reside there.
