FOR THE LOCAL POPULATION
Will this mining project really offer sufficiently interesting job prospects for the local population? It’s doubtful considering the hiring criteria for this field of expertise. A diploma and experience are required for the vast majority of employees recruited to work in the various trades required in mining.
As for jobs related to the mining sector, in fact, they are often filled by workers (with equal skills) from the region where the work is located.

WITH EXPERTISE
Today, the vast majority of mine workers have at least a trades diploma and have received solid training as mechanics, electricians, drillers, blasters, plumbers, pipefitters, machinery or crane operators; mining requires the participation of all these professions.
LESS SPECIALIZED WORKERS?
However, the least specialized workers who could be hired, would probably be the oldest who learned “on the job” and acquired their experience over years of work.
RATHER LIMITED
Opportunities for hiring local workers are uncertain for young families. However, given the lack of opportunities, they might choose to leave our region for a better future. Over the planned 15 years of mining, labour requirements may vary, from year to year, depending on the progress of the project.

MANAGERS
Among the jobs related to the management of activities, 34 permanent positions should be created with an average annual salary of $110,000.00 (between $95,000.00 and $195,000.00) including payroll taxes. These senior staff would be dedicated to administration, supervision, engineering, geology, surveying, maintenance planning and quality control.
THE EMPLOYEES
The operation component of the mine would be entrusted to some 48 mining workers and 11 workers dedicated to the maintenance of machinery, equipment and infrastructure. All these employees would be paid by the hour. It should be mentioned that labour needs would vary from year to year and according to the two categories of employees. Thus, the total number of hires could rise to around 74 during the first 3 years (a more active period) and decrease to 42 towards the end of the operating period.

In 2016, in the MRC (Regional County Municipality) of Papineau the tertiary sector, providing services, employed 75% of workers while the goods-producing sector, which includes activities in the primary sector (agriculture, forestry, industrial mining and fishing) and secondary sector (construction and manufacturing), provided employment for 25% of the labour force.
